2019 December, Penina, Algarve, Portugal
Each year the Confederation of Professional Golf (CPG), formerly known as the PGAs of Europe, organises its International Team Championship. The participating professionals are Coaches and Teachers, some of them with a playing background. This year's scene was the Penina Golf Club, the oldest golf course of the Algarve.
The Belgian delegation was formed by Captain Didier Dykmans, Guillaume Watremez and Nicolas Vanhootegem, the actual top-3 of the PGA Order of Merit. In its all a good mix of experience and young talent to face the other 15 teams who had entered. With the absence of the 4 teams of GB&I since their Brexit from the CPG, the goals was set for a top-5 finish.
After the first of 3 rounds, Team Belgium was already well in place to attain their goal. Round 2 saw a little slip back but top-5 and even top-3 were still in sight. The final round was exquisite as Captain Didier Dykmans showed the way with a 67 (-6) and 6 birdies by the team in the last 3 holes. Team Belgium finished T-2 with Italy behind favourites Holland.
Nicolas Vanhootegem was 2nd in the individual scores, followed by Didier Dykmans on 3rd. After finshing 3rd twice, this Team pulls our country to another level. Next year we go for the win!
